I spent last evening listening to entrepreneurs pitch their ideas at an event put on by the Web Startup Group. It happened to be my birthday and it was a great “gift” for me to attend. The energy and engagement that exists at these events is exciting to me. I love change and that is what these individuals are trying to create.
Without going in to the details I will summarize my thoughts on the ideas for change.
- The first presentation was from a group revolutionizing the way that companies deal with inventory management. The presentation was technical, had some clear deliverable dates, and in the end appears to be rolling forward on its own without any significant needs for assistance.
- The second presentation iActionable was from a team of individuals who are at the beginning stages of development and are close to a working prototype. Their business model, as far as revenue and cost structure was not clear, and their market was not well defined either. They are working towards a clear deliverable date of Q1 2010 and with some sounds business guidance may have an interesting future.
- The third presentation was given by a polished professional who had put together not only a nice set of slides, but he also presented a compelling video presentation that summarized the business opportunity and got the room deeply engaged. The slides included financials that we skimmed over as well as additional insights in to their desired market. At this point the technology does not exist to support the business model so they are seeking a co-founder(s) to assist in that area. I came away confident that I will hear more of this idea.
- Finally, the last official presentation was about an existing product offering TweetSimple that is available right now. The demonstration of the software was very compelling for those who are active members of Twitter, but the others in the room who were not familiar with it did not understand the potential market or value. I believe that the application has some great potential.
As each of these ideas come to the marketplace, we will discover new opportunities. I am excited to be able to engage with these creative thinkers who are ready to boldly go to new places and do new things. Bravo!
Nice write up. I was there as well. Great meeting. It was my first time attending as well.
