Leadership and Self Deception

Leadership and Self Deception is a widely read book on leadership. It relates to not only the office but frequently uses family situations to help the reader understand the principles. I enjoyed this book and its insights.

At the same time I have to say that the protagonist seemed a ‘little slow.’ Most of the narrative examples were so clearly written and it took him way too long time to see the answers. I guess this may only reinforce the principle that it is easier to see others faults rather than your own (mine)?

For me the most important principle in this book was that I personally need to accept accountability for my decisions every minute of every day. Transparency is a word that comes to my mind when I think of this. This includes self-transparency so that I do not allow myself to start down the path of self-deception.

Another principle that was reinforced in this book was the idea that good leadership brings value to an organization in a measurable way. They did not give an explicit equation however they wrapped up at the end with a clear discussion of the value proposition in avoiding self-deception. It is essential for the leader to bring measurable value to the company through living the principles taught in the book.
